What would have been impossible is now possible as a YouTuber Denis Shiryaev used available AI-based technology (DAIN & Gigapixel AI) to make an old 1896 low-resolution short film into 4K and 60 fps digital video.
Here is the ORIGINAL 1896 video is it’s full low resolution and grainy glory:
While here is the Upscaled to 4K, 60fps version:
To make this possible, Denis used Depth-Aware Video Frame Interpolation (DAIN) and TopazLabs Gigaixel AI System
About DAIN:
Video frame interpolation aims to synthesize non-existent frames in-between the original frames. While significant advances have been made from the deep convolutional neural networks, the quality of interpolation is often reduced due to large object motion or occlusion. In this work, we propose to explicitly detect the occlusion by exploring the depth cue in frame interpolation.
About Gigpixel AI:
Topaz Gigapixel AI is the first AI standalone application for superior Image upsampling, made for batch resizing your images up to 6x! It uses the power of Topaz’s proprietary Artistic Intelligence engine to make sharper and clearer upscaled images more than traditional upscaling tools. Because Gigapixel AI models calculates over a million calculations per pixel, this software is standalone only(it does not work as a plugin or studio adjustment) that inherently takes a long time to process your image, but the quality of the end result far surpasses our competitors.
